Sharing why I made a decision to raise heart and stroke awareness…..

After my third surgery, in 2010, a friend asked me, “What do you plan to do with your second chance at life?” By that point, I had volunteered for more than a decade for various nonprofit groups throughout the Metro Atlanta area,

So, I made a decision to give back to  by becoming a volunteer for the American Heart Association

I share my story of survival  from  heart valve replacement and three pacemaker surgeries , my high and low moments – plus provide heart health tips at health fairs and networking events throughout the community.

I also created a website, & health blog to provide a format for cardiac patients and their families to follow my heart journey and provide encouragement.

I can personally connect with cardiac patients and their families because I’m a survivor and they need to see and hear from a person who can relate to their health condition.

Sharing why  I made a decision to promote lung cancer awareness…

“World Lung Cancer Day”

“World Lung Cancer Day is observed on August 1 each year. In a move to beat back occurrences of lung cancer, people around the world observe this very special day. The mission for this day is simple — raise as much awareness of lung cancer as you can, while encouraging people to screen themselves for this disease.”

https://lcfamerica.org/get-involved/events/world-lung-cancer-day/

Re; World Lung Cancer Day 2023

I shared a collection of hearts and resources with the cancer patients and frontline heroes at Northside Hospital; Gwinnett.

What is Lung Cancer?

“There are two main types of lung cancer: small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A third less common type of lung cancer is called carcinoid.”

https://www.lung.org/lung-health-diseases/lung-disease-lookup/lung-cancer/basics/lung-cancer-types

What Are the Risk Factors?

Research has found several risk factors that may increase your chances of getting lung cancer.

What Are the Symptoms of Lung Cancer?

Different people have different symptoms for lung cancer. Most people with lung cancer don’t have symptoms until the cancer is advanced.

What Can I Do to Reduce My Risk?

To lower your risk of getting lung cancer, don’t smoke, avoid secondhand smoke, and get your home tested for radon.

Who Should Be Screened for Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer screening is recommended only for adults who have no symptoms but who are at high risk for developing the disease because of their smoking history and age.

How is Lung Cancer Diagnosed and Treated?

Lung cancer is treated in several ways, depending on the type of lung cancer and how far it has spread. People with non-small cell lung cancer can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these treatments. People with small cell lung cancer are usually treated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

April 30th 2022, my sister transitioned.

After I attended my sister’s memorial service, I made a decision to honor my sister and  promote lung cancer awareness throughout the community.

My beautiful sister, Karen was a strong, intelligent, caring person who was always willing to help anyone. She was a mother and a veteran. She raised four children who have now turned into amazing adults. She was a terrific example of living and trusting in God, reminding her family of the importance of teamwork, and rolling with the punches. “I will always admire her courage, strength, relationship with God, numerous achievements and the love she had for her friends and family.

I am totally committed to honoring her life and legacy.

“Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die.

80 percent of strokes are preventable.”

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month sheds light on less access to care, cultural stigma and lower quality care in minority populations — Oakland Family Services

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

“A mental illness is a condition that affects a person’s thinking, feeling, behavior or mood. These conditions deeply impact day-to-day living and may also affect the ability to relate to others. If you have — or think you might have — a mental illness, the first thing you must know is that you are not alone. Mental health conditions are far more common than you think, mainly because people don’t like to, or are scared to, talk about them. However:

  • 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year
  • 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year
  • 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year
  • 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24

A mental health condition isn’t the result of one event. Research suggests multiple, linking causes. Genetics, environment and lifestyle influence whether someone develops a mental health condition. A stressful job or home life makes some people more susceptible, as do traumatic life events. Biochemical processes and circuits and basic brain structure may play a role, too.

None of this means that you’re broken or that you, or your family, did something “wrong.” Mental illness is no one’s fault. And for many people, recovery — including meaningful roles in social life, school and work — is possible, especially when you start treatment early and play a strong role in your own recovery process.”

State of Lung Cancer: Racial and Ethnic Disparities

Black Americans with lung cancer were 18% less likely to be diagnosed early, 23% less likely to receive surgical treatment, 9% more likely to not receive any treatment, and 21% less likely to survive five years compared to white Americans.

Latinos with lung cancer were 16% less likely to be diagnosed early, equally likely to receive surgical treatment, 26% more likely to not receive any treatment, and 16% less likely to survive five years compared to white Americans.

Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders with lung cancer were 18% less likely to be diagnosed early and 5% more likely to not receive any treatment compared to white Americans. However, unlike other groups, they were 17% more likely to receive surgical treatment and 9% more likely to survive five years compared to white Americans.

Indigenous Peoples (American Indians/Alaska Natives)

Indigenous Peoples ( American Indians/Alaska Natives)  with lung cancer were 17% less likely to be diagnosed early, 25% less likely to receive surgical treatment, 11% more likely to not receive any treatment, and 13% less likely to survive five years compared to white Americans.

Source of Information:

https://www.lung.org/research/state-of-lung-cancer/racial-and-ethnic-disparities

What Causes Racial and Ethnic Disparities?

Disparities may arise from social factors that influence a person’s ability to access health care. These include differences among groups in:

  • Income
  • Access to health information
  • Access to doctors who screen for and diagnose lung cancer
  • Health insurance
  • Access to transportation
  • Paid medical leave
  • Participation in clinical trials
  • Environments where people live and work

What are Disparities in Early-Stage Lung Cancer?

It’s possible to cure lung cancers that are caught early, or before they’ve spread out of the lung, with surgery. More than 60% of people diagnosed with lung cancer before it spreads survive for at least 5 years. Once lung cancer has spread to nearby areas or more distantly, the chance of survival drops.

Another 2022 report on disparities in lung cancer treatment points to differences among racial groups in:

  • Social determinants of health (the conditions in which you are born into and live in)
  • Treatment patterns
  • Molecular testing to guide lung cancer treatment
  • Clinical trial involvement

National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day

“The Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day campaign was started to increase recognition of the specific heart valve disease risks and symptoms, improve detection and treatment, and ultimately save lives. Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day takes place every February 22 during American Heart Month. “

https://www.valvediseaseday.org/about-us/

Heart valve disease (valve disease) is a type of heart disease that involves damage to one or more of the heart’s four valves that causes them to not open or close properly and disrupts blood flow. Each of the heart’s four valves can have regurgitation or stenosis, or both—although the aortic and mitral valves are the most likely to be damaged. The most common types of valve disease are mitral regurgitation, mitral stenosis, aortic regurgitation, and aortic stenosis.

The Heart Valve Ambassador Program

  • In 2015, the American Heart Association established the Heart Valve Patient Ambassador program, a small, volunteer-based group of patients and caregivers who offer support to the millions of Americans impacted by heart valve disease.

  • This inaugural group of volunteer ambassadors is made up of seven heart valve disease survivors, including myself, and one caregiver from across the country who represent the face of heart valve disease in America and show that heart valve disease can affect people of different ages, backgrounds and lifestyles.

  • As ambassadors, we are leaders in the patient community and work directly with the AHA to raise awareness about heart valve disease resources for patients. We reach out to the patient community – both online, through the Support Network, and at in-person events – to offer support and direct patients to resources that are available through the AHA.

  • Through firsthand experience, we are able to offer valuable perspective and insights to other patients and caregivers struggling with a recent diagnosis or recovery from surgery.

Support Network

  • We spend a lot of time interacting with patients on the Support Network. The Support Network is an online support community dedicated to those who have experienced a heart event, heart disease, stroke or congenital heart defect as a survivor or caregiver.

  • We know educated patients recover faster and that there is a link between caregivers who feel emotionally supported and the level of care and they are able to provide to loved ones and family members. The Support Network provides a place for patients, families and caregivers to give and receive support, improve their own health and impact the lives of others.

  • The Support Network is more than a conventional support group, it gives individuals access to credible resources, experts via online chats and webinars as well as fellow survivors and caregivers.

Reflections….. “In Loving Memory of My Sister”

The Lungevity Foundation featured the article below ( October 2022)

Meet Kimberly Goodloe,  Lungevity Advocate…

In February, Kimberly’s sister, Dr. Karen Leigh Bryant, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Just a few short months later in April 2022, Karen passed away. Kimberly is still grieving the loss of her sister but found advocacy as a way to help families, especially single parents, know that they are not alone and support is available to them.

“I am totally committed to using my voice to advocate for lung cancer screening, more research, and increased support for patients and caregivers, especially around mental health. I want other families to have an easier time and to learn from our experiences. My sister was a single mom. She raised four incredible, smart, wonderful children. I want other single parents to know that they are not alone and that there is support. So many people feel isolated. That’s why raising awareness and doing community outreach is so important to make their journey easier.”

This November, you will find Kimberly out in her community distributing education and support materials, having meaningful conversations, and raising awareness for lung cancer while wearing white clothing, her pearls, and waving her white pom-poms.

Dr. Karen Leigh Bryant was born in Chattanooga, TN, on August 4, 1968. She began her formal education in Chattanooga at Valley View Elementary School, where her mother was a teacher. She accepted Christ as her savior (Union Grove Baptist Church, Chattanooga, Tennessee) at a young age. She sang in the school choir there and continued to excel in her other classes. She graduated from Valley View in 1979. After her graduation, she entered Boyd Bucannan, a private school, for two years. Later, she spent her Junior High Years at Dalewood Middle School, where she was a cheerleader. Her senior years were spent at Brainerd High School, where she was a member of the band. After graduating from Brainerd, she attended Memphis State for a year. Then she entered the United States Air Force serving in Germany and Italy. She completed her college education while still in the Air Force, got married, and began to raise a family. After resettling in Nashville, TN, she earned a B.S in Education and a Master’s Degree in Education at Tennessee State University and Doctoral Degree in Education at Trevecca Nazarene University. She went home to be with the Lord on April 30, 2022.

It was easy for Karen to talk with anyone about anything. She always loved to talk with her family and friends and help them with any problems that they were experiencing. Karen also liked to watch various English drama series and even got hooked on playing Animal Crossings on the Nintendo Switch her children bought her for her birthday. Karen was a strong, intelligent, caring person and was always willing to help anyone. She raised four children who have now turned into amazing grown adults. She was a terrific example of living and trusting in God, reminding her family of the importance of teamwork, and rolling with the punches in life gave way to creating strong, independent, and resilient children. She was a Superwoman with a capital S. Although she is with the Almighty God right now, she will always live on in our hearts, minds, and spirits.
